MS Dhoni Praises MI Youngster Vignesh Puthur

Mumbai Indians unveiled Vignesh Puthur to the cricket world by bringing him in as an Impact Substitute during their IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday night. The left-arm spinner made a striking impression on his IPL debut, dismissing three CSK batters to keep MI in the game while defending a challenging total at Chepauk.

The 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner dismissed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (53 off 26) in his opening over, followed by the dangerous Shivam Dube (9 off 7) and Deepak Hooda (3 off 5), sparking a mini collapse as the home side dropped from 78/1 to 107/4 in their pursuit of 156.

Young Vignesh Puthur had previously showcased his talent

Hailing from Kerala, young Vignesh Puthur had previously showcased his talent in the Kerala Cricket League and Tamil Nadu Premier League. However, his IPL debut marked his first exposure to senior-level cricket.

In a thrilling contest, CSK successfully chased down a tricky target, and after the match, a starstruck Vignesh approached the legendary MS Dhoni during the customary post-match handshakes. The wicketkeeper-batter attentively listened to the youngster and acknowledged his impressive debut with a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

“Pat on the shoulder for young Vignesh Puthur. I don’t think he will forget it for a long time,” remarked commentator Ravi Shastri during the high-stakes clash.

Opting to bowl first, CSK restricted MI to 155/9 in 20 overs, courtesy of a brilliant four-wicket haul from Noor Ahmad, who dismissed stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Robin Minz, and Naman Dhir. Deepak Chahar’s late cameo of 28 off 15 balls provided MI with a fighting total.

In response, CSK lost opener Rahul Tripathi early, but captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Vignesh then made an impact with three quick wickets, creating tension in the chase. Despite a brief scare with CSK losing half their side for 116, Rachin Ravindra (65 off 45) and Ravindra Jadeja (17 off 18) ensured a composed finish, guiding their team to victory with five balls to spare.
