Several countries listed below have enacted complete or partial bans on DeepSeek AI.
Italy: Last month, Italy became the first country in the world to officially ban DeepSeek AI. The app is no longer available in the European nation’s app stores. The Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA), which oversees privacy matters, requested information from the company regarding its user data handling, leading to the ban.
The consumer advocacy group Euroconsumers filed a complaint that prompted the DPA’s action. DeepSeek was banned just days after being given a 20-day period to respond.
Taiwan: Despite having strict regulations, Taiwan has not yet prohibited its private citizens from using the Chinese AI chatbot. However, the use of DeepSeek AI is banned in all public sector organizations. This includes public schools, state-owned enterprises, and critical infrastructure across the nation.
The Taiwan Ministry of Digital Affairs has also expressed concerns about potential of information leaks and cross-border data transmission risks posed by the Chinese startup. The sovereignty dispute between China and Taiwan has been ongoing for many years, with Taiwan being claimed as part of China’s territory.
Australia: The use of the DeepSeek AI chatbot is not permitted in Australia.
