Review of Chhaava
Story : When great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who started the unbeatable Maratha Empire, passed away, the Mughals felt relieved. But they didn’t realize that trying to take over the Deccan would mean facing Shivaji’s brave son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was just as strong and fierce.
Chhaava (which means “lion’s cub”) is a movie based on a Marathi novel by Shivaji Sawant. Furthermore, it’s about showing how brave Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was, and in this film, he’s played by Vicky Kaushal. History usually just says he was Shivaji’s son who got betrayed, captured, and killed by Aurangzeb (played by Akshaye Khanna), but the film shows there’s more to him. It highlights why his people admired him and his enemies were scared of him during his nine years as the Maratha ruler.
After his father passed away, Sambhaji, together with his trusted commander Hambirrao Mohite (played by Ashutosh Rana), unexpectedly surprised the Mughals by courageously attacking their city of Burhanpur. For the next nine years, he consistently kept stopping the Mughals from taking more land, which, as a result, made them really annoyed. Even when some of his own people turned against him, Sambhaji stayed brave until he was trapped in Sangameshwar. His strong spirit and love for freedom lived on, even after his harsh death.
The director of Chhaava
The director, Laxman Utekar, made Chhaava feel big and grand, perfect for the big screen. It starts with a cool slow-motion scene, but the first half isn’t very exciting. It’s mostly battles and songs, without much time to get to know the characters or their world. You don’t feel pulled into the story. AR Rahman’s music, like the loud and energetic “Aaya re toofan” with its Maharashtrian drums, is great and keeps things moving. But other songs, like “Jaane Tu,” don’t fit—they sound too modern for the old times. The piano feels weird in this setting, and you wonder if someone like Ajay-Atul would’ve been better for the music.
The second half is precisely where the movie truly gets good. Suddenly, the story picks up, and meanwhile, the feelings grow stronger. Then, the big finish—where Sambhaji courageously fights the Mughals all by himself—becomes super exciting. Moreover, lines like “A lion’s cub doesn’t run from dogs” dramatically enhance it. Additionally, the fight scenes are absolutely awesome, and finally, the ending looks stunningly amazing—making it well worth watching in a theater. Ultimately, that’s when the movie really shines.
