The story behind Shreyas fearless 97
Shreyas Iyer’s selfless 97-run innings in IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans on March 25 in Ahmedabad was a big moment for him. As the new captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), he scored an unbeaten 97 off just 42 balls, helping his team reach 243/5 and win by 11 runs. What stood out was how he cared more about the team than his own score. In the last over, stuck on 97, he didn’t try to get a century for himself. Instead, he told Shashank Singh to hit big, and Shashank scored 23 runs in the final six balls.
Former cricketer Ambati Rayudu praised him, joking, “For a Mumbai batsman, that’s surprising!” Mumbai players usually chase centuries, but Iyer, from Mumbai, chose teamwork over personal glory, earning lots of respect. After a tough 2024 when he lost his BCCI contract, Iyer made a strong comeback. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL win, did great in domestic games, and shone in the Champions Trophy. His IPL 2025 performance showed everyone he’s back, proving doubters wrong and establishing himself as a leader who puts the team first, guided by coach Ricky Ponting.
